jackson

D. F. Jackson III, M.D.

Originally a native of Southeast Alabama, Dr. Jackson received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University and his Medical Degree from the University Of Alabama School Of Medicine in Birmingham. His Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine was served at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where upon he also completed his Fellowship training in Gastroenterology.

Dr. Jackson is certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology with the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine). He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, the Alabama Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Houston County Medical Society, and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.

Dr. Jackson currently serves as the Medical Director of the GI Endoscopy Lab of Flowers Hospital. He is also the author of professional presentations and research papers on subjects related to the specialty of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Jackson and his wife, Melissa, have three children.

William D. McLaughlin, M.D.

A native of the Wiregrass area, Dr. McLaughlin received his B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Auburn University. He then went on to complete his Medical Degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School in 1982. His Internship and Residency were served at the University of Florida in Gainesville where completed his Gastroenterology Fellowship at University Hospital, at the University of Florida in 1987.

Dr. McLaughlin is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine), and American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology. He holds memberships in the American College of Physicians, Southern Medical Association, the Alabama Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Gastroenterology Association, the Houston County Medical Society, and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.

Dr. McLaughlin enjoys Auburn sports and outdoor activities with his wife, Sarah, and their four children.

Jeffrey J. Crittenden, M.D.

A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Birmingham-Southern College, Dr. Crittenden completed his Medical Degree at the University Of South Alabama College Of Medicine in Mobile where he also served his Internship and Residency.

Dr. Crittenden successfully earned his Gastroenterology Fellowship from the University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville, FL in 1990.

Certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Crittenden is licensed by the American Board of Internal Medicine; ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine), subspecialty of Gastroenterology. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Gastroenterology Association, Alabama Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology and the Houston County Medical Society.

He enjoys outdoor activities and traveling with his wife, Mary, and three children.

Robert P. Albares, M.D.

Originally from New Orleans, Dr. Albares received a BA in Biology from the University of New Orleans and attended the Louisiana State University of Medicine in New Orleans. He received his Medical Degree in 1985 and then served his Internship and Residency at the Louisiana State University Medical Center//Charity Hospital of New Orleans.

Dr. Albares completed his Gastroenterology Fellowship with the Louisiana State University Medical School Department of Gastroenterology in 1990.  He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Board of Gastroenterology.

He serves as an active member of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterology Association, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Alabama Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) in Gastroenterology and the Houston County Medical Society, and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. 

Dr. Albares resides in Dothan with his wife, Donna, and their four sons.

Samuel J. Tarwater, M.D.

Dr. Tarwater attended the University of South Alabama and Pensacola Junior College before completing his B.S. degree in Biology at the University of West Florida in Pensacola in 1984. He was an honors student throughout his undergraduate studies, proudly graduating Cum Laude.

He received his medical degree from The University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, FL, in 1988.  Where he then went on to serve his Internal Medicine Residency at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA.  Immediately following, Dr. Tarwater completed his Gastroenterology Fellowship at the same institution, finishing his postgraduate training in 1991.

Dr. Tarwater is certified by the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) since 1991. He holds memberships in the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology, Houston County Medical Society, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and the Alabama Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Tarwater and his wife, Jeanne, have three children.

Travis J. Rutland, M.D., FACG

Originally a native of Biloxi, Mississippi, Dr. Rutland comes from Mobile, Alabama where he attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile and graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Chemistry and a minor in Spanish.  He was then accepted into the University Of South Alabama College Of Medicine in Mobile where he went on to do his residency in Internal Medicine.  Specializing in Gastroenterology, Dr. Rutland became a Fellow in 2006.

Dr. Rutland is certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology with the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine). He holds memberships in the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and the Alabama Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.  His passion for gastroenterology is evident through the numerous lectures given on issues such as Serotonin and the GI tract and Liver Disease in Pregnancy.

Married to Beth Miller Rutland, M.D. the couple shares three beautiful daughters, Emma, Molly & Evelyn.

Beth Miller Rutland, M.D.

No stranger to the Wiregrass, anatomic & clinical pathologist Dr. Rutland is originally from Skipperville, Alabama and is very pleased to be much closer to home.

Dr. Rutland attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile and graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biomedical Science.  She then went to the University Of South Alabama College Of Medicine where she completed her internship and residency.  In 2007, Dr. Rutland was named Chief Resident of the Combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist department of South Alabama College of Medicine.  Most recently Dr. Rutland has been serving as Assistant Professor at the University of South Alabama Department of Pathology. She is certified through the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine).

Named as Delegate to the American Society for Clinical Pathology, Resident Council, member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the College of American Pathologists, and the Southern and American Medical Associations’ Dr. Rutland’s experience in the field of pathology is unmistakable. She is certified in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Married to Travis J. Rutland, M.D. the couple shares three beautiful daughters, Emma, Molly & Evelyn.

Marc L. Clark, M.D.

Originally a native of Gainesville, Florida, Dr. Clark received his undergraduate degree from Clemson University and his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. After completing his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Dr. Clark successfully completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in Ohio in 1986. He received the ASGE Fellow award following a presentation at Digestive Disease Week in San Francisco in 1986.

Dr. Clark is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology through the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine). He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the Wilderness Medical Society.

Dr. Clark practiced Gastroenterology for 24 years in Southeast Tennessee before relocating to the mountains of Northwest North Carolina in 2010. He has been an active member of the Wilderness Medical Society and has received certification in Advanced Wilderness Life Support. Dr. Clark previously served as a medical consultant for a nationally recognized ultralight backpacking organization. He enjoys long distance bicycle touring particularly in remote environments.

His undergraduate degree in Zoology with an emphasis in marine biology also prepared him for the development of Wildlife Ecosystems, a marine aquaculture and research facility dedicated to the protection and propagation of endangered coral reef ecosystems in environments as remote as the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific.

Dr. Clark and his wife Vanessa have relocated to the Wiregrass area to be closer to their two daughters and their growing families. He is honored to become part of the expanding team at Digestive Health Specialists of the Southeast.


Sarrels_web

Drew Sarrels, M.D.

Originally from north Alabama, Dr. Sarrels grew up in Decatur. He attended the University of Alabama where he was awarded the Septima Smith Award for Outstanding Biology student. After graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biology from the University of Alabama in 2006, he married Katie Gibson, his high school sweetheart, and moved to Birmingham. He attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine, where he received the Ellis Sparks Internal Medicine Award and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. After graduating magna cum laude from medical school, he decided to stay at UAB for his Internal Medicine internship and residency.

Drew received the C. Glenn Cobbs Award for Excellence in Internal Medicine during residency and, upon graduation, was selected for a Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UAB. As part of his three year fellowship training, he gave multiple lectures at UAB, presented colonoscopy quality improvement research at the American College of Gastroenterology national meeting, and was selected for participation in an Advanced Endoscopy course in Utah. 

Dr. Sarrels is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and is an active member of the American Gastroenterological Association, Alpha Omega Alpha medical society, Alabama Gastroenterological Society, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and Houston County Medical Society.

After spending ten years at UAB, Dr. Sarrels is honored to join the Digestive Health Specialists of the Southeast.  He, along with his wife, Katie, and two young children are excited to call the Wiregrass home.

Paul Lamb, M.D.

Originally a native of Bay Minette, Alabama, Dr. Lamb comes to Digestive Health Specialists after a decorated 11-year career in the U.S. Army Medical Department. His most recent assignment was as the Chief of Gastroenterology, Ft. Hood, Texas where coordinated the movement for Gastroenterology into a new medical center. Prior to that he was on the attending faculty for the Gastroenterology fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. He is a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan where he served as a Battalion Surgeon for the 3rd Infantry Division in 2013.

Dr. Lamb obtained his medical degree from the University of South Alabama where he graduated number one in his class and was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. After completion of medical school Dr. Lamb completed his training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the renowned Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX where he served as Chief of Residents and Chief of Fellows and was selected top resident all three years of his Internal Medicine Training. He also was selected for advanced biliary training during his 3rd year of fellowship.

Dr. Lamb is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds memberships in the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Lamb has several publications in peer reviewed journals. He has specialized training in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, radiofrequency ablation, electrohydraulic lithotripsy, luminal stenting, and endoscopic mucosal resection.

Dr. Lamb and his wife Elizabeth have four children and are excited to be in Dothan and contribute to this great community. He and his family enjoy all outdoor and water related activities and making great BBQ including Texas brisket and pulled pork.
